ICICI Bank Q2 FY27 Concall Updates
ICICI Bank Ltd delivered strong earnings growth in Q2 FY27, supported by higher net interest income, healthy loan growth, improved asset quality and stronger core operating profitability. However, a sequential decline in net interest margin and a treasury loss remain important factors for investors to monitor.
For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, ICICI Bank reported standalone net profit of ₹14,843 crore, up 20.1% from ₹12,359 crore in Q2 FY26. The result exceeded market expectations and reflected the strength of the bank’s core banking operations.
Net interest income, or NII, increased 17.7% year-on-year to ₹25,339 crore from ₹21,529 crore. NII represents the difference between interest earned on loans and investments and interest paid on deposits and borrowings. Its growth indicates continued expansion in the bank’s interest-earning business.
Core operating profit rose 21.8% year-on-year to ₹20,805 crore, compared with ₹17,078 crore a year earlier. Excluding dividends from subsidiaries, core operating profit increased 25% to ₹20,342 crore. This suggests that the bank’s underlying operating performance remained robust.
Profit before tax, excluding treasury income, increased 23.4% to ₹19,954 crore. This measure helps investors assess the performance of the core business without the volatility associated with treasury gains and losses.
Net interest margin, or NIM, stood at 4.18% in Q2 FY27, compared with 4.30% in Q2 FY26 and 4.36% in Q1 FY27. The sequential decline highlights pressure on the spread between interest earned and interest paid.
The bank noted that the benefit from interest on tax refunds was negligible in Q2 FY27, compared with an eight-basis-point benefit in Q1 FY27. Excluding that benefit, Q1 NIM was 4.28%, making the underlying sequential margin decline smaller than the headline comparison suggests.
Non-interest income excluding treasury increased 12.5% year-on-year to ₹8,277 crore. Fee income rose 20.1% to ₹7,795 crore, with retail, rural and business banking customers contributing approximately 75% of total fees. This diversified fee base is important because it supports earnings beyond interest income.
Treasury operations, however, recorded a loss of ₹230 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with a gain of ₹220 crore in Q2 FY26. The bank attributed the movement primarily to market conditions. This illustrates how treasury performance can influence total profit even when core banking income is growing.
Operating expenses increased 8.5% year-on-year to ₹12,811 crore, below the growth rate in NII and core operating profit. This helped support operating leverage and profitability. Maintaining this cost discipline will remain important as the bank continues to expand.
ICICI Bank’s loan portfolio increased 30% year-on-year to ₹18.32 lakh crore at September 30, 2026. However, this headline growth includes loans provided by international branches against FCNR(B) deposits. Excluding these loans, the portfolio grew 24.1%, providing a clearer view of underlying credit expansion.
Total period-end deposits increased 27.1% year-on-year to approximately ₹20.50 lakh crore. Excluding FCNR(B) deposits, deposit growth was 17%. The distinction is important because foreign-currency deposit mobilisation influenced the bank’s balance-sheet growth during the quarter.
Average deposits grew 21.2% year-on-year to ₹18.88 lakh crore. Deposit mobilisation remains a key factor for the bank because sustainable loan growth depends on access to stable funding at competitive costs.
The bank continued to benefit from demand across its retail and corporate lending franchises. Strong loan growth supports future interest income, but investors should also assess the quality of new lending, the funding mix and the effect of deposit costs on NIM.
Asset quality improved during the quarter. The gross non-performing asset ratio declined to 1.20% at September 30, 2026, compared with 1.58% a year earlier and 1.38% at June 30, 2026. The net NPA ratio improved to 0.30%, compared with 0.39% a year earlier and 0.35% in the previous quarter.
Provisions, excluding tax provisions, stood at ₹851 crore, down from ₹914 crore in Q2 FY26. The decline in provisions supported earnings growth. Nevertheless, the bank continued to monitor fresh bad-loan additions and recoveries, which remain important indicators of future credit costs.
The bank held contingency provisions of ₹13,100 crore and additional standard-asset provisions of ₹1,283 crore related to an earlier regulatory direction for the agricultural priority-sector portfolio. These buffers provide additional protection, although their future use and adequacy should be evaluated in the context of credit conditions.
Capital adequacy remained comfortable. The total capital adequacy ratio was 16.68%, while the Common Equity Tier 1 ratio stood at 16.01% on a standalone basis at the end of September 2026. Capital strength supports the bank’s ability to absorb losses and finance further growth.
Looking ahead, key factors include sustained NII growth, the direction of NIM, deposit mobilisation excluding FCNR(B), operating-cost control and asset-quality trends. The performance of treasury income will also influence reported earnings from quarter to quarter.
Overall, ICICI Bank’s Q2 FY27 results showed strong year-on-year growth in profit and core operating earnings, backed by loan expansion and improving asset quality. The main challenge is to maintain this growth while managing margin pressure and ensuring that balance-sheet expansion remains supported by sustainable deposits.
