HDFC Bank Q2 FY27 Concall Highlighted
HDFC Bank Ltd reported moderate year-on-year profit growth in Q2 FY27, supported by higher net interest income, continued loan expansion and improved asset quality. However, weaker treasury gains and pressure on net interest margins limited the growth in reported earnings.
For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, the bank reported standalone net profit of ₹19,510 crore, up approximately 4.7% from ₹18,641 crore in Q2 FY26. The result was slightly below analyst expectations, highlighting the impact of non-interest income and margin pressures.
Net interest income, or NII, increased 9.7% year-on-year to ₹34,619 crore. NII represents the difference between interest earned on loans and investments and interest paid on deposits and borrowings. The growth reflects the expansion of HDFC Bank’s lending business and its interest-earning assets.
Net interest margin, or NIM, declined to 3.16%, compared with approximately 3.30% in the previous quarter. The compression in margin is an important metric because it indicates the pressure on the spread between lending yields and funding costs.
The bank’s reported profit growth was also affected by lower treasury trading gains. Treasury gains fell to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. This sharp decline reduced the contribution of market-related income to the bank’s overall earnings.
Other income declined 3.6% year-on-year to approximately ₹13,831 crore. As a result, the increase in core interest income did not translate into an equally strong increase in reported net profit.
Operating profit before provisions and contingencies rose 5.6% year-on-year to approximately ₹29,483 crore. This indicates that the bank continued to grow its operating earnings, although the pace remained moderate compared with its NII growth.
Provisions and contingencies increased 2.1% year-on-year to approximately ₹3,574 crore. Higher provisions can reduce the amount of operating profit that flows through to net profit, making credit costs an important factor to monitor alongside revenue growth.
HDFC Bank’s gross advances increased 16.3% year-on-year to ₹32.20 lakh crore. The expansion demonstrates continued demand for credit across its retail, business banking and corporate lending franchises.
Retail advances grew 11.7% year-on-year, while small and mid-market lending increased approximately 24%. The faster growth in small and mid-market lending points to the importance of business banking and smaller corporate customers in the bank’s credit expansion.
Total deposits increased 18.8% year-on-year to ₹33.27 lakh crore, outpacing loan growth. A strong deposit base is important for supporting lending activity and managing funding requirements as the balance sheet expands.
The deposit mix remains an area to watch. CASA deposits grew 10.8% year-on-year and accounted for approximately 31.6% of total deposits. Current and savings accounts generally provide a lower-cost funding source than term deposits, so the pace of CASA growth can influence future net interest margins.
The bank’s credit-to-deposit ratio stood at approximately 96%. This reflects the scale of its lending relative to deposits and makes continued deposit mobilisation important for supporting future loan growth without creating additional funding pressure.
Asset quality improved during the quarter. The gross non-performing asset ratio declined to 1.11%, compared with 1.17% in the previous quarter. The net NPA ratio also improved to 0.37% from 0.41%, indicating a gradual improvement in the reported quality of the loan book.
The improvement in bad-loan ratios is encouraging because it can help contain future credit costs. Nevertheless, investors should continue monitoring fresh slippages, recoveries and provisions as the bank expands lending across different customer segments.
HDFC Bank’s capital adequacy ratio stood at 18.87%, providing a capital buffer to support growth and absorb potential losses. Capital strength remains an important consideration for a large lender operating in a competitive credit market.
The quarter also brought an important leadership development. Anup Bagchi is scheduled to take over as Managing Director and CEO on October 27, 2026. Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha has announced that he will step down at the end of December. Investors will be watching for continuity in strategy, funding priorities and execution during the transition.
For the first half of FY27, standalone net profit increased approximately 4.8% year-on-year to ₹38,570 crore. The half-year performance shows continued earnings growth, but also underlines the relatively moderate pace of reported profit expansion compared with the bank’s balance-sheet growth.
Looking ahead, key factors include the direction of net interest margins, deposit growth, the CASA mix, treasury income and credit costs. A recovery in margins could support profitability, but the timing will depend on loan repricing, deposit competition and the composition of the bank’s funding and lending portfolios.
Overall, HDFC Bank’s Q2 FY27 results show steady core banking growth and improving asset quality, but reported profit growth remained modest because of lower treasury gains and margin compression. Investors following the earnings call should focus on whether the bank can improve margins, maintain deposit momentum and convert loan growth into stronger sustainable earnings.
