Laurus Labs Share Price Rallies: Record Earnings and 75% CDMO Growth Drive Optimism

Laurus Labs delivered a strong financial performance in the September quarter of FY27, with consolidated net profit more than doubling as its contract development and manufacturing business continued expanding. The Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company reported robust revenue growth, stronger operating profitability and improving manufacturing efficiency.

Consolidated net profit increased approximately 126.7% year-on-year to ₹442 crore, compared with ₹195 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The sharp improvement reflected stronger operating earnings and an increasingly favourable business mix.

Revenue from operations climbed 33.4% to ₹2,206 crore from approximately ₹1,653 crore a year earlier. The growth was supported by continued demand across contract manufacturing and affordable medicines, demonstrating momentum in both major business divisions.

Operating profitability improved significantly during the quarter. According to the company’s earnings release, EBITDA increased approximately 78% to ₹762 crore, while the EBITDA margin expanded to 34.5%.

The margin improvement was particularly important because operating earnings grew substantially faster than revenue. Higher manufacturing utilisation, increased commercial supplies and a favourable product mix helped the company generate stronger profitability from its existing operations.

The CDMO business emerged as the primary growth engine, reporting revenue of ₹904 crore, an increase of approximately 75% year-on-year. This performance reflected expanding commercial manufacturing activities and progress across customer development programmes.

Within CDMO, small-molecule revenue rose approximately 86% to ₹875 crore. The increase was driven by commercial API supplies, advancing late-stage clinical projects and the gradual ramp-up of recently developed manufacturing assets.

CDMO companies provide pharmaceutical development and manufacturing services to other drugmakers. Their activities can range from early-stage process development to large-scale commercial production, often involving complex technologies and long-term customer relationships.

Laurus Labs has been strengthening its position in this segment through investment in specialised manufacturing capabilities. The strategy aims to expand its participation in higher-value pharmaceutical development and commercial supply programmes.

The Affordable Medicines division also delivered growth, with revenue increasing approximately 15% to ₹1,302 crore. Continued demand across antiretroviral products and the US formulations portfolio supported the segment’s performance.

Finished dosage formulations generated revenue of ₹677 crore, representing approximately 31% year-on-year growth. Meanwhile, the API business remained relatively stable at ₹625 crore, indicating that growth was not uniform across every product category.

The company also reported stronger gross margins, supported by its improving revenue mix. A greater contribution from CDMO operations helped lift overall profitability as manufacturing capacity utilisation improved.

Sequential performance was encouraging as well, with revenue rising from approximately ₹2,026 crore in the June quarter to ₹2,206 crore in September. Net profit increased from approximately ₹368 crore to ₹442 crore during the same period.

For the first half of FY27, Laurus Labs reported revenue of ₹4,233 crore, representing approximately 31% year-on-year growth. First-half EBITDA reached ₹1,406 crore, reflecting sustained operating momentum across the business.

Management highlighted the commissioning of the company’s first commercial-scale peptide manufacturing facility in Visakhapatnam. The development strengthens Laurus Labs’ capabilities in a specialised pharmaceutical segment attracting increasing industry investment.

Peptide manufacturing is becoming an important area of pharmaceutical innovation, including treatments associated with metabolic and other complex diseases. However, converting additional manufacturing capacity into revenue will depend on customer programmes, regulatory requirements and commercial demand.

Laurus Labs also announced plans to acquire a 60% stake in Canada-based Galenvs Sciences. The proposed investment is intended to strengthen its capabilities in oligonucleotide technologies and advanced pharmaceutical development.

Another strategic initiative involves acquiring a 52% stake in SI&C Resins, a company specialising in peptide-resin technologies. Together, these investments could support a more integrated offering across development, raw materials and manufacturing.

The company’s expansion strategy requires substantial capital expenditure, which investors should monitor alongside earnings growth. Manufacturing investments can create future revenue opportunities but may also increase depreciation, working capital requirements and execution risks.

Laurus Labs operates in a competitive pharmaceutical manufacturing industry that includes companies such as Divi’s Laboratories, Syngene International and other specialised CDMO providers. Customer relationships, technical expertise, regulatory compliance and manufacturing reliability remain important competitive factors.

For shareholders, the strong earnings performance raises questions about the sustainability of current margins and the pace of CDMO growth. Valuation, customer concentration, capital expenditure and the timing of commercial project execution deserve continued attention.

Laurus Labs Q2 FY27 results demonstrate substantial progress in revenue growth, profitability and specialised manufacturing expansion. The next phase of its investment story will depend on converting new capabilities into recurring commercial revenue while maintaining operational efficiency and financial discipline.
