Muthoot Finance GST Raid: Tax Authorities Conduct Search at Head Office
Muthoot Finance has disclosed that the Goods and Services Tax Department conducted a search and seizure operation at its registered office in Kochi, Kerala, during the final week of October 2026.
The company informed stock exchanges about the development on November 2, 2026, through a regulatory filing submitted under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations.
According to the official disclosure, the GST operation commenced on October 29, 2026, at approximately 11 AM and concluded on October 30, 2026, at around 9:30 PM.
The proceedings were conducted under Section 67 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, which provides authorities with powers relating to inspections, searches and seizures under specified statutory conditions.
The operation took place at the company’s registered office on NH Bypass, Palarivattom, Kochi. The disclosure did not identify additional company branches or offices as locations covered by this particular search.
Muthoot Finance stated that it received a copy of the official search mahazar on November 2 at approximately 11 AM. The document records details associated with the proceedings conducted by the authorities.
The company confirmed that it had cooperated fully with GST officials throughout the operation, providing the explanations, documents and information requested during the proceedings.
Management also indicated that the company would continue extending assistance to the authorities and furnish additional information whenever required during subsequent stages of the process.
Importantly, Muthoot Finance stated that its regular business operations remained unaffected. According to the company, normal activities continued during the search and seizure proceedings.
The exchange disclosure did not specify the precise tax issue being examined, the value of any material seized or whether authorities had identified a particular discrepancy during the operation.
No additional tax demand, financial penalty or confirmed violation was announced in the November 2 disclosure. The existence of a search does not independently establish wrongdoing.
Section 67 of the CGST Act permits authorised officers to conduct searches when the statutory requirements are satisfied. Any subsequent assessment or enforcement action depends on the findings and applicable legal procedures.
For Muthoot Finance, the development attracts attention because the company operates one of India’s largest gold loan businesses, serving borrowers through an extensive network of branches.
Gold loans represent the company’s principal lending activity. Customers pledge eligible gold jewellery as collateral and receive financing based on applicable valuation, lending and regulatory requirements.
The GST framework applies to relevant taxable services and transactions associated with financial businesses. However, the company has not disclosed whether any particular service or transaction prompted this investigation.
The regulatory development also coincided with the company’s financial reporting period. Muthoot Finance released its September quarter financial results and related investor information around the same time.
Its Q2 FY27 results indicated approximately 39% growth in reported profit after tax. The earnings announcement and GST search disclosure are separate developments and should not be interpreted as having an established connection.
Muthoot Finance has previously dealt with tax related proceedings. In March 2026, the company disclosed that an earlier GST demand and penalty totalling approximately ₹1.91 crore had been reduced to nil through a rectification order.
That earlier matter concerned proceedings involving the Central GST authorities in Noida. It should not be confused with the October 2026 search at the company’s Kochi registered office.
From an investor perspective, the immediate financial implications of the latest operation remain uncertain because the disclosure contains no quantified demand, penalty or identified liability arising from the search.
Further information may emerge through subsequent regulatory filings, communications from the authorities or formal proceedings. Investors will need to distinguish confirmed developments from speculation about possible tax exposure.
Muthoot Finance continues to operate its lending business while the regulatory process develops. Its future disclosures, compliance responses, financial performance and any confirmed findings from the GST authorities will provide a clearer basis for assessing the significance of this event.
