Lupin Q2 FY27 Results: Profit Falls 22%, But US Sales and Margins Beat Expectations
Lupin reported its Q2 FY27 financial results on November 4, 2026, revealing a mixed performance as strong sales growth was accompanied by weaker profitability. However, the pharmaceutical company exceeded selected analyst expectations and its earlier US revenue guidance, creating a more nuanced earnings picture.
Consolidated product sales increased 14% year on year to ₹7,785.5 crore, compared with ₹6,831.4 crore in Q2 FY26. Net profit declined 22.2% to ₹1,155.3 crore from ₹1,484.8 crore, reflecting pressure from higher operating costs and other financial factors.
Total revenue from operations, including other operating income, increased 11.1% to ₹7,827.3 crore. Other operating income declined substantially, explaining why total operating revenue grew more slowly than product sales.
Lupin reported EBITDA of ₹2,171.2 crore, a decline of 10.7% from ₹2,431.3 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The company’s reported EBITDA includes foreign exchange gains and other income, which are important when comparing different profitability measures.
The reported EBITDA margin declined to 27.9% from 35.6%, representing a contraction of 770 basis points. Despite the significant annual decline, this margin exceeded the 23.7% estimate published by Nomura before the results.
The difference between Lupin’s reported margin and Nomura’s estimate was 420 basis points. However, this comparison requires caution because the company’s investor presentation also reports a different EBITDA measure that excludes certain income components.
On the investor presentation basis, EBITDA stood at approximately ₹1,957.4 crore, with a margin of 25.1%. This was lower than the headline reported margin of 27.9%, but it still represented a substantial improvement over the 23.7% brokerage estimate if both calculations are comparable.
The investor presentation margin declined from approximately 31.3% in Q2 FY26 to 25.1% in Q2 FY27. This indicates that operating profitability weakened materially despite the better than expected outcome against the published brokerage estimate.
US revenue provided another positive surprise. Lupin generated approximately $317 million in quarterly US sales, exceeding Nomura’s estimate of $310 million by around 2.3%.
More importantly, US revenue exceeded management’s earlier quarterly guidance range of $250 million to $280 million. Actual sales were approximately 13.2% above the upper end of that range, indicating stronger performance than the company had previously indicated.
Nevertheless, US revenue declined from approximately $366 million in Q1 FY27. The sequential reduction reflects increasing competition and the loss of exclusivity affecting important products in Lupin’s North American portfolio.
In rupee terms, US sales increased 9.3% year on year to ₹3,020.2 crore but declined 12.1% sequentially. The United States remained Lupin’s largest geographic market, accounting for approximately 39% of global product sales.
Competition involving generic Jynarque and generic Myrbetriq remains an important consideration for the US business. These products supported earlier growth, but increasing competitive intensity could affect future revenue and pricing.
India continued to deliver healthy growth, with quarterly sales increasing 14.7% to ₹2,383.6 crore. Domestic formulations revenue grew 13.8%, broadly consistent with the mid teens growth anticipated by Nomura before the results.
Lupin introduced five brands across therapeutic categories in India during the quarter. Its established presence in chronic therapies and continued product launches supported domestic performance.
Other developed markets recorded particularly strong growth of 45.7%, generating sales of ₹1,182.3 crore. Emerging market sales declined 3.5% to ₹890.8 crore, highlighting differences in demand and competitive conditions across regions.
Global active pharmaceutical ingredient sales increased 20.2% to ₹308.6 crore. Although this business contributed a relatively small share of consolidated sales, it provided another source of revenue growth during the quarter.
Gross profit increased 15.4% to ₹5,777.4 crore, while gross margin improved to 74.2% from 73.3%. However, employee expenses increased 28.8% and manufacturing and other expenses rose 23.2%, reducing the benefit of stronger gross profitability.
Research and development expenditure increased to ₹618.1 crore, representing 7.9% of sales. These investments support Lupin’s development pipeline, including complex generics, respiratory treatments and other pharmaceutical opportunities.
The company received four abbreviated new drug application approvals and one additional drug application approval from the US FDA during the quarter. It also launched one product in the United States, taking its marketed generic portfolio to 149 products.
During the first half of FY27, Lupin’s US subsidiary settled an ongoing antitrust matter for approximately ₹316.28 crore without admitting liability or wrongdoing. The settlement is relevant when assessing exceptional items, although the available disclosures do not establish that the entire amount affected Q2 profit.
Lupin enters the second half of FY27 with stronger annual sales, US revenue above earlier guidance and selected operating measures ahead of analyst expectations. However, declining sequential earnings, higher expenses and competition in the US market remain important factors in evaluating the sustainability of future profitability.
