Balrampur Chini Q2 FY27 Results: Sugar Business Surges, Profit Nearly Doubles and Margins Recover

Balrampur Chini Mills has reported an impressive recovery in Q2 FY27, with consolidated profit rising nearly 90%. But the results contain an interesting contradiction. While the sugar business delivered a powerful improvement, distillery profits declined and the company’s new bioplastics venture continued losing money.

Consolidated revenue from operations increased 12.3% to ₹1,876.28 crore, compared with ₹1,670.8 crore in the same quarter last year. The growth was encouraging, but the much faster increase in profit makes the underlying business performance more interesting.

Net profit jumped 89.8% to ₹102.29 crore from ₹53.89 crore last year. Compared with the June quarter, profit more than doubled from ₹44.1 crore, although seasonal changes in the sugar industry make annual comparisons especially important.

Operating performance also improved considerably. Operating profit increased approximately 65.7% from the previous year, while the operating margin expanded to around 7.9% from 4.8%. This indicates that the company generated substantially more earnings from its sales.

The improvement becomes clearer when examining the sugar business separately. Sugar segment revenue increased approximately 19.8% to ₹1,578.1 crore, making it the main contributor to consolidated revenue growth.

But the real surprise came from sugar profitability. Segment profit before tax increased approximately 166% to ₹140.8 crore, compared with around ₹52.9 crore last year. This improvement played a major role in the company’s overall earnings recovery.

Why did sugar profitability improve so sharply? Stronger sales and improved segment margins supported the business, while management had previously indicated that domestic sugar prices could remain firm around ₹43 to ₹46 per kilogram.

However, higher sugar prices do not automatically translate into higher profits. Sugarcane procurement costs are also important, and management had earlier warned that cane costs could increase during the financial year.

This creates an important challenge for the upcoming crushing season. Balrampur Chini needs favourable sugar selling prices and efficient production to protect margins as the cost of purchasing sugarcane changes.

The distillery business presented a very different picture. Revenue declined approximately 19.9% to ₹324.6 crore, while segment profit fell around 34.1% to ₹39.1 crore. This weakness partly offset the strong recovery in sugar earnings.

Distillery operations are important because sugar companies can use sugarcane based materials to produce ethanol. This creates another source of revenue, although production economics depend on feedstock availability, pricing and government policies.

Balrampur Chini therefore faces a balancing act between its sugar and ethanol businesses. The company needs to decide how to use available raw materials efficiently while responding to changing demand and prices across both markets.

There was also an important detail within reported earnings. Other income included approximately ₹16.95 crore from forfeited earnest money deposits, providing a one time benefit during the quarter.

After adjusting for the estimated after tax effect of this gain, profit growth was closer to 69% rather than the reported 90%. The improvement remained substantial, but this distinction helps explain how much of the increase came from recurring business performance.

Another area attracting attention is Balrampur Chini’s investment in polylactic acid, commonly called PLA. This is a type of bioplastic made using renewable materials, representing an attempt to expand beyond traditional sugar and ethanol operations.

The company is developing a PLA manufacturing project in Uttar Pradesh with an investment exceeding ₹3,000 crore. If commercially successful, this business could eventually provide another source of earnings, although the project requires significant investment.

For now, the PLA business remains in an early stage. Its quarterly segment loss widened to approximately ₹5.6 crore from around ₹1 crore last year, even as segment revenue increased to approximately ₹16.9 crore.

Management had earlier indicated a target of around 40% average PLA capacity utilisation during January to March 2027. Achieving higher production volumes will be important for spreading factory expenses and improving the economics of the new business.

The company also received approval for a government grant of approximately ₹75 crore toward its PLA research and development facility. This provides support for the project, but commercial success will still depend on demand, production efficiency and competitive pricing.

Another important development was the company’s decision to declare an interim dividend of ₹4 per share. Balrampur Chini also reduced short term borrowings substantially after raising equity capital, strengthening its financing position during a period of major investment.

For the first half of FY27, consolidated net profit increased to ₹146.43 crore from ₹105.46 crore last year. This shows that the September quarter recovery contributed significantly to the company’s overall six month performance.

Balrampur Chini enters the next crushing season with a much stronger sugar business, but several developments deserve attention. Sugarcane costs could influence margins, distillery earnings need improvement, and the PLA project must begin demonstrating commercial progress. The strength of the next earnings cycle will depend on how effectively these three businesses perform together.
