Astral Q2 FY27 Results: Strong Sales Growth, Weak Profit Performance and Margin Pressure
Astral Q2 FY27 results delivered a striking contrast between strong business growth and weaker profitability. Consolidated revenue increased 26% year on year, but net profit declined 5.6%, raising questions about the company’s operating margins.
Revenue from operations reached ₹1,988.3 crore, compared with ₹1,577.4 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Sequentially, revenue also increased approximately 26%, indicating stronger sales compared with the preceding quarter.
Despite this growth, consolidated EBITDA increased only 1.5% year on year to ₹272.3 crore, compared with ₹268.2 crore. This showed that the additional revenue did not translate into a comparable improvement in operating earnings.
EBITDA margin contracted sharply to 13.7% from 17% a year earlier, representing a decline of approximately 330 basis points. Higher raw material costs and delays in passing those increases through to customers contributed to the pressure.
Consolidated profit after tax before other comprehensive income declined to ₹127.3 crore from ₹134.8 crore. However, profit improved approximately 5.9% sequentially from ₹120.2 crore in Q1 FY27.
An important factor affecting reported earnings was a ₹9.5 crore goodwill impairment associated with the company’s US subsidiary, Seal It Services. This exceptional charge reduced reported profit before tax.
Excluding the impairment at the pre tax level, profit before tax was ₹181.4 crore, compared with reported profit before tax of ₹171.9 crore. This distinction matters when assessing recurring profitability.
The plumbing business remained Astral’s largest revenue contributor. Segment revenue increased 25% year on year to ₹1,398.3 crore, supported by higher sales volumes and continued demand for piping products.
Plumbing sales volumes increased 19.1% to 72,934 metric tonnes. This indicated that physical demand contributed significantly to revenue growth rather than the entire increase being driven by pricing.
However, plumbing segment EBITDA rose only 6.9% to ₹227.6 crore. The segment’s EBITDA margin declined to approximately 16.3% from 19% in the corresponding quarter.
The combination of strong volume growth and lower margins suggests that higher input costs and pricing pressures affected the profitability of the core business. The ability to recover these costs through future pricing remains important.
Astral’s paints and adhesives business also recorded substantial revenue growth. Segment revenue increased approximately 28.6% to ₹590 crore, demonstrating continued expansion beyond the plumbing portfolio.
However, profitability in paints and adhesives weakened significantly. Segment profit declined to approximately ₹15.4 crore from ₹31.3 crore, indicating that revenue growth came with considerable margin pressure.
The segment profit margin consequently fell to approximately 2.6% from 6.8% a year earlier. This performance highlights the challenge of maintaining profitability while expanding in competitive product categories.
Raw material prices remain a major consideration for Astral because its products depend on polymers, chemicals and other industrial inputs. Changes in these costs can influence margins when selling price revisions are delayed.
The company also continues to expand its product portfolio. Its planned introduction of an aluminium PEX piping product represents another opportunity to address additional plumbing applications.
Astral’s bathware business remains part of its broader product diversification strategy. Growth in this category could support its building materials portfolio, although profitability and scale will determine its contribution.
For the first half of FY27, consolidated revenue increased 21.4% to ₹3,566.3 crore. EBITDA rose 11.7% to ₹516.3 crore, while profit after tax increased 15.7% to ₹247.5 crore.
The first half performance presents a stronger profit growth picture than the second quarter alone. Nevertheless, the gap between revenue and EBITDA growth shows that margin management remains an important issue.
Astral’s board also approved an interim dividend of ₹1.50 per equity share. The announcement provides a shareholder distribution alongside the company’s continued investment in business expansion.
Looking ahead, plumbing demand, product pricing, polymer costs and the profitability of paints and adhesives will be important indicators. Sustained volume growth could support revenue, but earnings recovery will depend on improved operating efficiency.
For investors following Astral, Q2 FY27 demonstrates that strong sales growth does not automatically translate into stronger profits. The key issue is whether the company can convert expanding volumes and revenue into healthier margins and more consistent earnings growth.
