Coal India and DVC Sign MoU to Set Up ₹16,500 Crore Ultra Supercritical Power Project in Jharkhand
In a significant step toward expanding its footprint in thermal power generation, Coal India Limited (CIL) has entered into a strategic partnership with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to set up a 2×800 MW Ultra Supercritical Power Plant in Jharkhand. The proposed ₹16,500 crore project will be a brownfield expansion of DVC’s existing Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS), which currently operates at a capacity of 2×250 MW.
The non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed in Kolkata in the presence of Mr. P.M. Prasad, Chairman, CIL, and Mr. S. Suresh Kumar (IAS), Chairman, DVC. The agreement was inked by Mr. Debasish Nanda, Director (Business Development), CIL, and Mr. Swapnendu Kumar Panda, Member (Technical), DVC.
Under the terms of the MoU, a joint venture company will be formed with equal equity contribution (50:50) from both state-owned entities. The project is aimed at leveraging CIL’s coal supply chain and DVC’s power generation expertise to meet growing energy demands.
Coal required for the ultra supercritical units will be sourced from nearby coalfields operated by Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Central Coalfields Limited, both subsidiaries of CIL.
This collaboration marks a key milestone in CIL’s strategy to diversify beyond coal mining and develop capabilities in thermal power generation, particularly at a time when India is reinforcing its focus on energy security and infrastructure development.
