Dakshineswar is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, located near Kolkata on the banks of the Hooghly River. Built by Rani Rashmoni in 1855, the temple is renowned for its association with the great spiritual leader, Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev.

The temple complex features a large courtyard, with rooms along the boundary walls, and the main temple, which has nine spires and follows the traditional ‘Nava-Ratna’ style. Inside the temple compound, there are also twelve temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Story Behind Dakshineswar: When Rani Rashmoni was planning a trip to Kashi, the night before her journey, Goddess Kali appeared in her dream. The Goddess told her that there was no need to go to Kashi and that she should build a temple in Bengal itself, on the banks of the Ganges.

Following this, Rani Rashmoni bought land in the village of Dakshineshwar in Kamarhati, which is shaped like the back of a turtle (a shape with tantric importance), and established the temple there. Later, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa became the head priest of this temple. He lived on the temple grounds with his wife, Sarada Ma, and was often visited by Swami Vivekananda.
