Bikaji Foods Q2 FY27 Results: Western Snacks Growth, Sweets Demand and Margin Pressure

Bikaji Foods International delivered a mixed Q2 FY27 performance, with western snacks emerging as a major growth driver while packaged sweets recorded declining sales. The contrast highlights changing category momentum within the company’s expanding packaged foods portfolio.

Western snacks revenue surged 44.2% year on year, significantly outperforming overall company growth. This was one of the strongest developments in the quarter and demonstrated increasing traction in a competitive product category.

However, packaged sweets revenue declined 11.3% year on year. Management attributed much of the weakness to the shift in the Diwali festive season, with associated demand expected to benefit the following quarter.

This timing difference is important because sweets consumption is particularly sensitive to festive occasions. Management expects the category to benefit from seasonal demand in Q3, although the actual recovery will depend on customer purchases.

Bikaji’s consolidated revenue from operations, as presented in its earnings release, increased 13% year on year to ₹938.5 crore. Underlying volume growth stood at 5%, indicating that sales growth exceeded physical volume expansion.

Ethnic snacks remained the company’s largest business category, generating revenue of approximately ₹575.1 crore. The segment grew 19.7% year on year, outperforming consolidated revenue growth.

The strong performance in ethnic snacks reflected continued momentum in the company’s traditional packaged snack portfolio. Products such as bhujia and namkeen remain important contributors to Bikaji’s overall business.

Western snacks generated approximately ₹81.5 crore in quarterly revenue. Although smaller than ethnic snacks, the category’s rapid growth makes it increasingly relevant to the company’s product diversification strategy.

Papad revenue declined 6.3% year on year. The company attributed this weakness to supply chain challenges affecting handmade papad, highlighting operational difficulties in part of its traditional product portfolio.

Despite healthy growth in several categories, profitability weakened. EBITDA declined 7.4% year on year to ₹118.7 crore, indicating that operating expenses increased faster than the company’s earnings generation.

EBITDA margin contracted to 12.6% from approximately 15.4% in the corresponding quarter. The decline of around 280 basis points represented a significant deterioration in operating profitability.

Gross margin also declined by approximately 60 basis points to 34.4%. Inflation in key commodities, particularly edible oil, contributed to the pressure on the company’s cost structure.

Higher marketing expenditure and fuel costs added to the challenge. These expenses affected profitability even as the business expanded sales across its major snack categories.

Profit after tax, using the company’s earnings presentation measure, declined 11.2% year on year to approximately ₹69 crore. This contrasted with the 13% revenue increase and showed that sales growth was not translating into stronger bottom line earnings.

The statutory consolidated financial statements separately reported revenue from operations of ₹921.45 crore and profit after tax of ₹68.96 crore. These figures follow the statutory reporting presentation and should not be mixed directly with the company’s management presentation measures.

Sequentially, statutory consolidated revenue increased approximately 27.9%, while profit after tax improved around 16%. However, the sequential improvement did not eliminate the year on year pressure on profitability.

Distribution expansion remained a significant part of Bikaji’s growth strategy. Direct distribution coverage increased by approximately 19,200 outlets, taking the company’s direct reach to around 3.9 lakh outlets.

A wider distribution network can support product availability, especially in markets where organised packaged snack consumption is expanding. However, distribution growth also requires investment in sales infrastructure, logistics and market development.

The company continued investing in brand building, product innovation and premiumisation. Its promotional initiatives and presence across emerging retail channels are intended to improve visibility and reach new consumers.

For the first half of FY27, management presentation revenue increased 12.8% to approximately ₹1,672.8 crore. EBITDA stood at ₹217.7 crore, while profit after tax was approximately ₹128.4 crore.

Management expressed confidence in the longer term demand environment and expects the festive calendar shift to support packaged sweets in the following quarter. This remains an expectation rather than a confirmed recovery, making subsequent category performance important.

For investors following Bikaji Foods, the central story is the divergence between strong western and ethnic snacks growth and weaker profitability. The key developments to monitor are the anticipated sweets recovery, commodity costs, EBITDA margins and whether distribution expansion can translate into sustainable earnings growth.
