Eternal Q2 FY27 Results: Profit Jumps 92%, But Misses Estimates!
Eternal, the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit, has reported strong revenue growth for the second quarter of FY27. However, its earnings announcement has left investors examining the gap between business expansion and actual profitability.
The company reported consolidated net profit of ₹125 crore for the quarter ended September 2026, compared with ₹65 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
This represents year-on-year profit growth of approximately 92.3%, an impressive increase on the surface.
However, the reported profit was below market expectations. Different analyst surveys had projected earnings ranging from approximately ₹250 crore to ₹304 crore.
This gap is important because share prices frequently respond to the difference between actual results and expectations rather than the growth percentage alone.
Revenue from operations increased 77.6% year-on-year to ₹24,138 crore, compared with ₹13,590 crore in Q2 FY26.
Sequentially, revenue increased from ₹20,211 crore in the June quarter, reflecting continued expansion across Eternal’s businesses.
Net profit also improved sequentially from ₹92 crore in Q1 FY27 to ₹125 crore in Q2 FY27. Despite these improvements, profitability remained modest relative to the company’s overall revenue.
Consolidated EBITDA increased to ₹752 crore from ₹239 crore a year earlier, reflecting significant operating-level improvement. The reported EBITDA margin expanded to approximately 3.1%, compared with 1.8% in the year-ago quarter.
Nevertheless, the EBITDA figure was slightly below one reported analyst estimate of ₹776 crore, while the corresponding margin expectation was approximately 3.3%.
This combination explains the mixed earnings picture: revenue growth was strong, operating profitability improved, but bottom-line performance disappointed expectations.
Total expenses increased to approximately ₹24,166 crore from ₹13,813 crore a year earlier. Higher delivery-related expenses, employee costs and depreciation contributed to pressure on consolidated earnings.
Blinkit remained one of the biggest contributors to Eternal’s expansion story. The quick-commerce business added 308 stores during the September quarter, taking its network to approximately 2,751 stores.
Eternal has also outlined an ambitious expansion strategy targeting more than 3,500 Blinkit stores by March 2027. Its longer-term ambition is to reach approximately 5,000 stores by March 2028.
These targets highlight management’s confidence in the opportunity to expand rapid grocery and everyday-product deliveries. Blinkit’s net order value increased approximately 79.3% year-on-year to ₹20,940 crore.
This growth suggests that the business is benefiting from a combination of increasing order activity, customer adoption and wider geographical coverage.
However, rapid store expansion requires significant investment in property, inventory, logistics, technology and personnel. New stores generally take time to achieve the same level of operating efficiency as established locations.
Therefore, investors should distinguish between the profitability of mature Blinkit markets and the economics of newly launched stores.
Eternal indicated that mature cities are generating adjusted EBITDA margins above 5%, offering evidence that stronger profitability may be achievable at scale.
The challenge is translating that performance into sustained profitability across the expanding store network. Competition remains another important consideration, particularly from Swiggy’s Instamart and other quick-commerce operators.
Aggressive expansion across the industry can create pressure on delivery charges, customer incentives and operating costs.
For investors, the central question is whether Blinkit can maintain its growth momentum while gradually improving margins.
Eternal’s established food-delivery business, Zomato, delivered a different but equally important performance. Zomato’s net order value increased approximately 21.5% year-on-year to ₹11,445 crore.
Its adjusted EBITDA increased approximately 25% year-on-year to ₹627 crore. These figures indicate that food delivery continues to provide an important earnings contribution while Blinkit pursues faster expansion.
However, food delivery operates in a competitive environment where consumer spending, restaurant partnerships and delivery economics influence performance. Swiggy remains an important competitor in food delivery as well as quick commerce.
Comparing Eternal and Swiggy requires examining order growth, customer retention, contribution margins and cash requirements rather than simply comparing headline revenue.
Eternal’s District business represents another potential growth opportunity through entertainment, dining and other going-out experiences.
However, District continues to face profitability challenges, making the pace of investment and the development of its business model important factors to monitor.
The company has announced plans to consolidate its going-out operations under Zomato Entertainment, its wholly owned subsidiary.
This restructuring is intended to simplify the organisation and bring related activities into a more focused operating structure.
Eternal also announced a proposed transaction involving a 5.4% stake in Mygate through a share swap connected to its investment in Adonmo.
Although these developments are smaller than Blinkit’s expansion, they demonstrate that Eternal is continuing to reorganise and broaden its digital-services ecosystem.
The stock-market reaction reflected investor sensitivity to earnings expectations. Eternal shares declined approximately 3.5% on October 21, closing near ₹308.80.
This movement should not be interpreted as proof that the company’s long-term growth strategy has failed. Instead, it illustrates how high-growth businesses can face selling pressure when reported earnings fall short of forecasts.
For shareholders, valuation remains particularly important because expectations for Blinkit’s future growth and profitability influence how investors assess Eternal.
A company can continue expanding rapidly while its share price struggles if investors begin expecting slower growth or lower eventual margins.
Conversely, stronger store-level profitability, improving cash generation and consistent earnings delivery could support confidence in the business model.
The next few quarters will be important for understanding how quickly Blinkit’s new stores mature and whether consolidated profit growth can catch up with revenue expansion.
Investors should monitor Blinkit’s store additions, net order value, adjusted EBITDA, Zomato’s order growth, District’s losses and the company’s overall cash generation.
Eternal’s Q2 FY27 results ultimately present two contrasting developments: strong demand and operating expansion on one side, and a significant profit miss on the other.
The most important question is no longer whether Eternal can grow rapidly. It is whether that growth can translate into sufficiently strong, sustainable profits to meet the expectations already reflected in its valuation.
