LTCG Tax Removal Coming? Nirmala Sitharaman Big Statement Sends Sensex Above 73,000!

Indian equity markets staged a spectacular recovery on October 13, 2026, with the BSE Sensex surging 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to close at 73,033.78.

The NSE Nifty 50 also recorded a powerful advance, gaining 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to finish at 22,721.95.

The rally followed three sessions of intense volatility, offering investors relief after a period of uncertainty and selling pressure.

One of the biggest developments influencing sentiment was Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remarks about taxation in India’s capital markets.

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Sitharaman acknowledged ongoing discussions about long-term capital gains tax and securities transaction tax.

She described the debate surrounding market taxation as healthy and expressed openness to hearing suggestions from investors and other stakeholders.

These remarks attracted considerable attention because investors have repeatedly raised concerns about the cumulative impact of different taxes on equity-market participation.

However, the Finance Minister did not announce any reduction, removal, or formal review of LTCG tax or STT.

Her comments instead indicated a willingness to consider stakeholder opinions during the broader policy discussion ahead of the next Union Budget.

Nevertheless, financial markets reacted positively to the possibility that investor concerns could receive greater attention from policymakers.

The Sensex recorded one of its strongest single-day advances in recent months, supported by buying across major index constituents.

The Nifty 50 also registered its strongest daily percentage gain in more than two months. Technology stocks emerged as particularly important contributors to the market recovery.

The Nifty IT index surged approximately 5.22%, significantly outperforming the broader benchmark indices.

Shares of major technology companies, including HCL Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services, attracted substantial buying interest.

The strong performance of IT stocks helped strengthen the Nifty’s overall advance. Short-covering also appeared to contribute to the rally as traders adjusted positions following the market’s recent weakness.

Short-covering occurs when market participants who previously sold borrowed shares purchase them to close their positions.

This buying can accelerate upward price movements, especially when several heavily traded stocks recover simultaneously.

However, a rally supported by short-covering does not necessarily establish the beginning of a sustained upward trend.

Investors also monitored developments in crude oil prices and the Indian rupee, both of which can influence market sentiment.

Lower crude oil prices can reduce concerns about India’s import bill, inflation, and operating costs for several industries.

A relatively stronger rupee may also help improve confidence in India’s external economic position. Despite the sharp rise in benchmark indices, market participation was not equally strong across every segment.

Large-cap stocks performed better than several smaller companies, indicating that the recovery was concentrated in selected market leaders.

This distinction matters because a sustainable market recovery generally benefits from broader participation across sectors and company sizes.

The discussion surrounding LTCG and STT remains important because changes in transaction costs and investment taxation could influence market behaviour.

However, tax policy must also balance investor expectations with government revenue requirements and broader fiscal priorities.

Investors should therefore distinguish between encouraging policy statements and actual changes announced through official government notifications.

Upcoming corporate earnings, foreign institutional investment flows, inflation developments, and global market conditions will remain important influences on Indian equities.

Overall, the Sensex’s 1,109-point surge, the Nifty’s recovery above 22,700, and the exceptional strength in technology stocks marked an important improvement in sentiment.

Whether the rally develops into a sustained recovery will depend on earnings performance, broader buying participation, and concrete policy developments rather than expectations alone.
