Vishal Mega Mart Q2 FY27 Concall: Revenue Up 14%, Profit Up 4%
Vishal Mega Mart Limited delivered steady revenue growth in the second quarter of FY27, supported by its value-focused retail model across apparel, general merchandise and fast-moving consumer goods. However, profitability grew more slowly than revenue as a shift in festive shopping demand affected operating leverage and margins.
Revenue from operations increased 14% year-on-year to approximately ₹3,398.5 crore, compared with ₹2,981 crore in Q2 FY26. The performance reflects continued demand for affordable products and the company’s expanding network of stores across India.
Reported consolidated profit after tax was approximately ₹157.9 crore, up 3.7% year-on-year from around ₹152 crore. Profit growth was modest relative to revenue growth, highlighting the pressure that operating costs and seasonal demand patterns can place on a value retailer’s earnings.
Operating EBITDA before Ind AS 116 and employee stock option charges increased 3.7% year-on-year to ₹262.2 crore. On this comparable operating measure, the EBITDA margin was 7.7%, compared with 8.5% in the corresponding quarter last year.
The company also reported a higher EBITDA figure under accounting measures that include the impact of lease accounting. Investors should distinguish this figure from the company’s pre-Ind AS 116 operating EBITDA because the two measures are not directly comparable.
The contraction in the comparable operating margin was an important theme in the quarter. While revenue increased, the company did not achieve the same pace of growth in operating earnings, reflecting the effect of festive timing and operating deleverage.
Vishal Mega Mart explained that major festivals shifted from the second quarter into the third quarter this year. This change affected the timing of customer purchases, with the company estimating a negative impact of approximately three to four percentage points on reported same-store sales growth.
Reported same-store sales growth, or SSSG, was 5.4% in Q2 FY27. After adjusting for the shift in festive demand, the company estimated underlying SSSG at approximately 9%. This adjusted figure provides additional context, but it is a management estimate rather than the reported headline result.
Same-store sales growth is an important measure for retailers because it tracks sales growth from existing stores rather than growth generated by opening new outlets. A sustainable improvement in SSSG can support stronger store productivity and better operating leverage.
The company continued to expand its retail network during the quarter. It added 26 gross stores and 25 net stores, taking its total store count to 844 as of September 30, 2026.
Store expansion is central to Vishal Mega Mart’s long-term growth strategy. New stores increase the company’s reach into additional markets, but they also require investment in premises, inventory, employees and distribution infrastructure before reaching mature productivity.
The company’s product offering spans affordable apparel, general merchandise and FMCG products. This combination allows it to serve households seeking everyday essentials alongside clothing and other discretionary purchases, with value pricing remaining a key part of its positioning.
For the first half of FY27, revenue from operations increased 16.4% year-on-year to approximately ₹7,125.5 crore. The stronger H1 revenue growth provides a broader view of the company’s performance beyond the festive timing effects seen in the second quarter.
Reported same-store sales growth for H1 FY27 was 7.7%. The company estimated that the shift in festival timing reduced this figure by approximately 1.5 to 2 percentage points, with adjusted H1 SSSG at around 9.5%.
H1 operating EBITDA before Ind AS 116 and ESOP charges increased 12.5% year-on-year to ₹649.2 crore. The comparable operating EBITDA margin was 9.1%, against 9.4% in H1 FY26, indicating that margins remained slightly lower despite healthy revenue growth.
Adjusted H1 profit after tax, before ESOP charges, rose 15.8% to approximately ₹436.7 crore. This adjusted figure differs from reported profit after tax because it excludes the specified employee stock option expense, so investors should compare like-for-like measures when assessing trends.
Management has indicated that the third quarter should benefit from the shift in festive purchases. The company expects Q3 same-store sales growth to exceed 10%, although actual performance will depend on customer demand, competitive pricing, the timing of purchases and broader consumption conditions.
Vishal Mega Mart has also outlined plans to add more than 100 stores annually. Its long-term ambition is to build a network of approximately 2,000 large-format stores, allowing it to extend its presence across India’s value-retail market.
The company expects operating leverage and revenue growth to help support gradual margin improvement over time. Management has indicated an ambition for EBITDA margin to increase by around 30 basis points annually, although achieving this will depend on sales growth keeping pace with rental, staffing, logistics and other operating costs.
Competition remains an important consideration. Value-focused retailers compete on price, product availability, store convenience and the appeal of their merchandise. Maintaining affordable pricing while protecting gross margins is therefore a central challenge as the business scales.
The key near-term factors to monitor are Q3 festive sales, same-store sales growth, operating EBITDA margins, inventory management and the productivity of newly opened stores. A recovery in sales growth during the festive quarter could improve operating leverage, but sustained margin recovery will require disciplined cost management.
Overall, Vishal Mega Mart’s Q2 FY27 results showed healthy revenue growth but comparatively modest profit growth and pressure on its comparable operating EBITDA margin. The festive timing shift may explain part of the slowdown, making Q3 performance an important test of underlying demand and management’s growth expectations.
