Sona Comstar Q2 FY27 Concall: Revenue Up 35%, EV Sales Jump 129%
Sona BLW Precision Forgings Limited, popularly known as Sona Comstar, reported its strongest quarterly performance to date in Q2 FY27. The mobility technology company achieved record revenue, EBITDA, profit after tax and battery electric vehicle (BEV) revenue, supported by strong demand for electric-mobility components and new business wins.
Consolidated revenue reached ₹1,547 crore, increasing 35% year-on-year. EBITDA rose 23% to ₹356 crore, while profit after tax (PAT) increased 29% to ₹223 crore. The company also reported a net profit margin of 14.4%.
Despite higher operating earnings, EBITDA margin declined to 23.0% from 25.3% in Q2 FY26. Management attributed the pressure to higher steel and copper costs, elevated freight expenses and a product mix shift towards traction motors, which currently carry comparatively lower margins.
Management maintained its EBITDA margin guidance of 23–25%. It indicated that cost increases can be passed on to customers over time, although the recovery may occur with a lag. Investors should therefore track whether margins stabilise as input costs and product mix evolve.
The first-half performance was also strong. H1 FY27 revenue increased 43% year-on-year to ₹2,857 crore, EBITDA rose 34% to ₹658 crore, and PAT climbed 36% to ₹403 crore. The company reported an EBITDA margin of 23.0% for the first half.
A major growth driver was the battery electric vehicle business. BEV revenue surged 129% year-on-year to approximately ₹606 crore in Q2 FY27. BEVs contributed a record 51% of automotive revenue, demonstrating Sona Comstar’s increasing exposure to electric mobility.
This growth reflects business gains with existing customers as well as new orders, particularly in electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The company is expanding beyond traditional mechanical components into traction motors, controllers, sensors and integrated mobility solutions.
Sona Comstar secured ₹3,600 crore of new business during the quarter, its highest-ever quarterly order addition. Its net order book reached ₹25,100 crore, the second-highest quarter-end level reported by the company. This provides a substantial pipeline of potential future revenue, although the timing of production launches and customer demand will influence actual execution.
Electric-vehicle and Robotics & Physical AI programmes accounted for approximately 65% of the net order book. This illustrates the company’s strategic shift towards electrification and emerging technology applications while continuing to serve conventional internal-combustion-engine vehicle programmes.
The company commercialised three new products during the quarter, the highest number launched in a single quarter in its history. These included a helical limited-slip differential for electric vehicles, air springs for railway passenger coaches and rear radar sensors for two-wheelers.
The helical limited-slip differential programme for a global electric passenger-vehicle manufacturer adds approximately ₹700 crore to the order book, with production expected to begin in H1 FY29. This order expands Sona Comstar’s offering in advanced driveline systems for electric vehicles.
An integrated motor-controller programme for an Indian two-wheeler manufacturer added approximately ₹380 crore to the order book, with production expected to commence in H1 FY28. The company also secured additional traction-motor volumes worth approximately ₹1,250 crore, with production of the additional volumes expected to begin in H2 FY27.
Sona Comstar also won a rear-radar-sensor programme for an Indian two-wheeler manufacturer, adding approximately ₹100 crore to its order book. The company is expanding its intelligent and connected solutions portfolio as safety technology and electronic content become increasingly important in mobility.
Its traditional internal-combustion-engine business continues to generate opportunities alongside EV growth. During the quarter, new programmes included differential assemblies for passenger vehicles and starter motors. This diversification helps reduce dependence on a single propulsion technology.
Sona Comstar’s Driveline Division received the 2026 Deming Prize for Total Quality Management. The recognition followed nine years of work to strengthen operational processes, product quality and organisational discipline. Quality systems are especially important for automotive suppliers serving global original-equipment manufacturers.
The company is also developing a broader technology portfolio spanning robotics, Physical AI, intelligent and connected solutions, automotive systems and railway applications. These opportunities may support long-term diversification, but the scale and timing of commercial adoption remain uncertain, particularly in early-stage robotics markets.
Cash generation was another positive feature of the first half. Sona Comstar reported free cash flow from operations of approximately ₹446 crore in H1 FY27, after capital expenditure of around ₹148 crore. Operating cash flow was approximately ₹594 crore, equivalent to around 90% of EBITDA. The company said H1 free cash flow from operations exceeded one and a half times the amount generated during the whole of FY26.
Management also reiterated its medium-term aspiration of 25% compound annual revenue growth. This is an aspiration rather than a guaranteed outcome, and delivery will depend on order conversion, production ramp-ups, customer programmes, the global automotive cycle and continued investment in technology.
The principal risks include raw-material inflation, freight costs, margin pressure from product mix, changes in global vehicle demand and possible delays in customer production schedules. The growing EV business is a significant opportunity, but rapid growth also requires the company to maintain product quality, manage capacity and deliver programmes on schedule.
For investors, the key metrics to monitor are BEV revenue growth, EBITDA margins, conversion of the ₹25,100 crore order book into sales, new-product commercialisation and cash-flow generation. It will also be important to assess how much of future growth comes from established automotive programmes versus emerging robotics and intelligent-mobility applications.
Overall, Sona Comstar’s Q2 FY27 results highlight strong growth in electrification, record quarterly financial performance, substantial order wins and progress in product innovation. The main question for coming quarters is whether the company can sustain this growth while protecting margins and converting its order pipeline into profitable revenue.
